Tapping into celebrity social networks

When the famous British comedian Stephen Fry was trapping in a lift (elevator) during a power outage, it didn't stop him connecting to his fans via Twitter. The famous and wannabe famous are finding that engaging their audience via social networks is the new direct marketing. No doubt many tweets are the work of a PR agency and not the actual celebrity, but the message is clear: these direct mediums are cheap to access, allow real time 'marketing' and it's possible to build huge audiences. On the flip side, if - for example - you're marketing eco products it's a reasonable assumption that joining Al Gore's network is going to give you access to those with a better than average propensity to buy your offer.
