Structure
The primary purpose of structure is to inform search engines and direct visitors to content that will encourage them to act.
If search engines can't figure out your subject (keyword theme), you will get no search traffic.
If visitors can't get to the content that interests them, they will not act.
With the wrong website structure you will likely create an isolated desert island.
Principles
- Search engines need to make sense of your web presence.
- They do this though indexing your content,
- ..plus your relationship with other sites and social networks.
- If this makes no sense (as is often the case) you will not rank.
- Visitors need to be quickly directed to content of interest.
- Unless you do so they will leave without acting.
- There should be a short path from arriving to your call-to-action.
